Office Depot reports progress in CSR - USA

Office Depot has released its 2011 Corporate Citizenship Report, showing that it earned $2.43 million from recycling, up 37% from 2009.

The company, which has a goal of earning more money from product recycling than it spends on sending waste to landfills, also reduced waste costs by 4 percent to $3.81 million. In 2010, Office Depot recycled 59 percent of waste from its operations, up from 58 percent in 2009, en route to a target of 80 percent.
 

“In 2010, Office Depot remained steadfast in all aspects of our corporate social responsibility commitments despite economic conditions that remained challenging for the office supply business,” said Neil Austrian, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Office Depot. “I am confident that we will continue to make progress in this area as we are committed to the task at every level of our global operations.”
 

Office Depot’s was recognized in 2010 when Newsweek magazine ranked Office Depot the #1 Greenest Large Retailer in the U.S., and the #18 Greenest Large Company Overall. The Company was especially recognized for its focus on transparent environmental disclosure.
 

The company also published its second annual Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) Catalog, which is says is the first and only catalog of its kind in the office products industry. The catalog features more than 1,300 products offered by 30 vendors defined as certified minority-, women-, disabled-, and veteran-owned businesses.
