Danish-backed budget grocery chain Netto has announced it will be introducing craft supplies into its UK stores in 2008.
Manufactured by Papermania, the stock will include ink pads, foam squares, rollers, stamps, cutting and punching tools, stickers, scissors, adhesive, folders and designer cards kits.
"Many existing Netto customers will be very pleased with the opportunity to purchase these goods in our stores,” said non-food buyer Emma Roberts. “We are also hoping that by stocking a known crafting brand such as Papermania we will draw new customers into our stores."
The products will hit the shelves on Monday 7th January and will, the company believes, support hobbyists. "There is definitely a gap in the market for us. Many towns and cities do not have craft outlets so crafters have to drive to large out of town outlets or order online where they can often be charged a premium.”
Asked if shop assistants will be able to deliver necessary advice and expertise, Emma concedes the ranges will need to be aimed at more experienced customers. "We picked items in big packs to appeal to the serious crafter – mainly so that we can offer fantastic savings but also because we cannot realistically offer any advice in store for the beginner.”
Thus a big controversial argument comes out with smaller craft shops which cannot afford such low prices but then give some advice for free to customers who just bought their craft products in retail stores. How can they compete with it?
