FELLOWES DEFENDS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AT PAPERWORLD - Germany

Business machines & organisational solutions manufacturer Fellowes initiated actions to protect its intellectual property rights at Paperworld 2010.

German Customs Authorities, accompanied by Fellowes, confiscated shredders displayed on the exhibition stands of 2 manufacturers which were in violation of Fellowes’ design rights and patents. The seizures related to infringements of Fellowes SafeSense patent.

During the show, shredders were removed from the offending exhibitor booths and restrictions placed on related marketing materials where references to the infringements were mentioned. At Paperworld 2009, Fellowes conducted a similar investigation which led to legal proceedings against a Chinese-based manufacturer.

John Fellowes, vice president and general manager Business Machines, Fellowes, commented “We applaud the German customs authorities for their ability to understand technical patent issues and to act decisively. Messe Frankfurt's support demonstrates that it will not be complacent in allowing intellectual property rights to be violated at its venues. It is vital that Fellowes and other companies that invest heavily in innovations are able to protect our intellectual property.”

Mr Fellowes added “Although it is always regrettable to have to resort to legal remedies, it becomes unavoidable when an infringer chooses to ignore reasonable warnings. Consumer driven innovation is at the heart of our product development strategy and our customers and end-users believe and trust in the brand because of technologies like SafeSense® and our 100% Jam Proof System™. We have an obligation to our brand and to our customers to protect and defend our designs and innovations.”
